About Bay City, Michigan

Established in 1837, Bay City was originally known as “Lower Saginaw” until Bay County was organized in 1857. It was during that time that Bay City came to be called what it is today.

Near Saginaw, the waters were too shallow for ships that needed to ship lumber in order to build and produce more ships. This caused an influx of citizens to settle in Bay City, where the waters were deep enough for ships to navigate.

Being situated so perfectly near navigable water, where the economy heavily relied on shipping, gave Bay City the boost it needed to develop into a 2000-strong bustling community by 1860.

Today, Bay City has a population of roughly 35,000 and remains (by the slightest margin) the largest U.S. city by population on or near Lake Huron.

Moving to Bay City, Michigan

If you’re from Michigan, whenever someone asks, “Where do you live?”, we generally hold up our right hand and point. In the Mitten State, Bay city is located near the “thumb” of Michigan and set on the waterfront.

From historic buildings and delicious food to awe-inspiring outdoor attractions, you can always find loads to do here in Bay City, MI:

Learn About Ships

Those visiting the Bay City area should take a detour to the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum. Take a peek into the past and discover our country’s rich naval history. Did we mention that the museum is a retired Navy Destroyer? Be prepared to traverse all 418 feet of the USS Edson, better known as “Three Guns, No Waiting.”

If you’re more into experiences and want something more invigorating, visit BaySail and check out their rentable Appledore Schooners. Take the whole family for some fun and up-close-and-personal time admiring one of Michigan’s Great Lakes, Lake Huron. You can even rent a boat at night and enjoy a relaxing evening under the stars.

Support Local Businesses

City Market is a wonderfully modern and reimagined 1900s-era farmers market bringing life the area of Bay City.

They have roughly 45 stalls that feature vendors with locally grown and curated fresh produce, including fresh juices, meats, veggies and more. They even have on-site food vendors creating food made-to-order. City Market accepts food-assistance programs and offers weekly shopping deals to create fresh food availability for everyone.

Get Your Grub On

Lucky’s Steakhouse is the perfect plate to whet your appetite after a long day of shopping and fun in the sun. With a wide selection of dishes from steak and fish to chicken and pasta, you’re sure to find something to fill you up.

We suggest trying the Flower Onion to start and moving on to their salads made with fresh greens and finishing off with a filling plate of baby back ribs that just fall off the bone. If you’re so inclined, take a peek at the dessert menu for rich and creamy dishes like key lime pie, carrot cake, and cheesecake.

If you like Polish food, stop by Krzysiak’s House Restaurant. Their authentic Polish cuisine really shines in their entree and soup selections. Consider trying the popular “duck blood soup,” Czarnina, or their Polish take on a Philly Cheese Steak, Don’s Polish Philly. Don’t forget to try out their lunch buffet for a sampling of their different flavors!

Outdoor Fun

Bay City State Park is home to one the largest coastland wetlands in the Great Lakes Region, Tobico Marsh. More than a thousand feet of sandy beaches and over 2,000 acres of marsh, woodlands and meadows, Bay City Park is perfect for anyone looking to get more in touch with Michigan’s wildlife or soak in the sun at the beach.

In the heart of downtown Bay City lies Wenonah Park. This space is primarily used for art and public performances but still remains a beautiful structure within Bay City for residents to take a leisurely stroll or stop by and watch some entertaining performances or rent some space for a wedding, party or other celebratory event.
